The Challenge

A friend of mine recently asks me about training and diet as he has signed onto a weight loss challenge. Since I have been through the bulk up, drop weight, contest diet and training diet, pigging out, stop eating, over training, you name it… I have been there. After all, I was and still am my best guinea pig when it comes to training and diet.  So I could definitely relate to his concerns and frustrations on how to proceed with this unattainable weight loss challenge.  He had a mish mash plan set up from talking to various amateurs and reading books, a concoction that could possibly work, I think, but maybe not  in the most effective and efficient manner.  So I gave him some suggestions:

  • Take a good look at your own body in the mirror, take some pictures in exercise wear, be honest, but be kind.
  • Make an assessment, what do I need to improve, what can be improved in a given time frame? Be realistic, be kind.
  • Write down some attainable goals with a time table that will work with your life style, we all have lives. Remember, we are not movie stars being paid to lose weight and shape up for a movie in 2 months, so have kinder expectations.
  • Meet with an experience professional and discuss your workout plan, find someone that truly understands what it means and feels to go through what you will have to go through and that he/she can teach you how to do it.  Good athletes do not necessary mean they are great teachers, to teach effectively is a gift and an art. Make sure you are working towards your realistic goals, not theirs.
  • Follow the plan with discipline, diligence and find some fun with it. You will be so happy with the results once you get over the first 2 weeks, everything gets easier after that; including the sore muscles from training and the yearning for that bag of Doritos or double scoop chocolate fudge sundae, or the 800 calories “protein” smoothies.
  • Get a bonus by wearing MBTs wherever you go, you will be exercising even when your plan did not say so.
  • Give yourself a big hug when you look at yourself in the mirror again, a month later. You are on your way to that goal.
